More War & Conflict Studies
As the Armed Conflict Events Data (ACED) project progresses, an effort is being made to compare the results with other investigations into conflict. Several substantial studies of war have been conducted with the expectation that understanding gained by the research and analysis of these historical conflicts provides guidance for shaping responses to the complex and often contentious peace and security issues concerning current conflicts. Some of the information found in these research projects is not presently available in the conflicts documented here. By analyzing other studies of warfare and incorporating the information, the objective of producing a comprehensive military history of militarized disputes worldwide will be achieved. A thorough understanding of warfare requires awareness of different approaches which have been taken and the results that have been achieved. At this time, the war lists of the Correlates of War Project and the PRIO/Uppsala Armed Conflict Dataset are being analyzed. In principle, these studies provide subsets, based on specified criteria, of all the conflicts which are supposed to be included in ACED. Therefore, ensuring the inclusion in ACED of all hostilities recorded in these studies is a priority. Current analysis shows that some conflicts presented in ACED ought to be included in these subsets as well.
Correlates of War Project
For ACED purposes, the primary resources available from this source are three datasets on wars (Inter-State, Extra-State and Intra-State) covering wars beginning between 1816 and 1997. Each of the lists is primarily organized by date of occurrence and includes start and end dates, geographic region, casualties (defined by battle deaths) and participants. Correlates of War have well defined criteria for inclusion of events and the information provided although these definitions have been disputed in other research. ACED includes most of the wars listed.

P/U Armed Conflict Dataset
The Armed Conflict Dataset available from PRIO (Peace Research Institute, Oslo) / Uppsala (Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University) (P/U) provides more comprehensive coverage for the period 1946 to 2003. Information is organized by geographic region. Data for each occurrence includes a list of participants, geographic region, scale and timeframe.
