A Study of War
 Wars of the World*
Latvian War of Independence 1919-1920

After Germany's defeat in World War I, the Latvians (Letts) proclaimed an independent state with Karlis Ulmanis (1877-1940) as prime minister, but in early January 1919, Soviet (Bolshevik) force invaded the country and seized its capital, Riga, where a Soviet government was set up. However, German-Latvian troops, with the approval of the Allies, forced the Soviets to withdraw in March 1919. Though the Treaty of Versailles required the Germans to leave the area, they attempted to take over Latvia and occupied Riga, but were expelled finally in November 1919. Under Allied pressure, the Soviets, who had again tried to take over, were evicted from the country completely in January 1920, and concluded an armistice with the Latvians a month later. By the Treaty of Riga on August 11, 1920, the Soviet government recognized Latvia's independence.

Armed Conflict Events Database

Armed Conflict Events Data (ACED) is an research project providing independent information about known wars, international disputes, civil wars, rebellions, coups, revolutions, genocides and other violent conflicts. ACED has been online since December 2000. Various partial revisions and modifications have been implemented since then, however, the limitations of the this format hamper further development. During 2005, the decision was made to radically restructure the available conflict information into a database. The new Armed Conflict Events Database (ACEDb) will substantially increase the utility of available conflict data for students of military history. As well, it will offer expanded opportunities to add and edit records of conflict. Existing research material will be maintained in its present form but no revisions are planned. More news about the development of ACEDb may be found at News About the Armed Conflict Events Database. Feedback is welcome.
