Armed Forces Movement in Portugal 1974

In a bloodless coup, the Portuguese Armed Forces Movement ended the dictatorship in Portugal, instituting democracy and freeing the overseas colonies, many of them in a state of armed insurrection. General Antonio Spinola became the first president of the new democracy, holding the post until he resigned (September).
