Germans fly Nazi flag over the Channel IslandsIn the English Channel... The German forces begin to occupy the Channel Islands, the only British territory which they will conquer.

In Bucharest... The Romanian government concedes to Soviet territorial demands presented the previous day.

In the United States... In the Republican Party convention at Philadelphia Wendell Willkie is selected as the presidential candidate after the sixth ballot by a margin of 654 to 318 over Senator Taft. The convention is overwhelmingly in favor of a policy of nonintervention in the war.


This chronological study of the Second World War provides a comprehensive day-by-day account of WWII. While focused on the military history of the war, with an emphasis on the battles and campaigns fought, the timeline includes social and political history as well.
