On the Eastern Front... Soviet forces launch a new offensive to recover recent losses west of Kiev. The 1st Ukrainian Front (Vatutin) penetrates the lines of the German 4th Panzer Army which lacks reserves to counter the attack.

In the Solomon Islands... An American task force of cruisers and destroyers bombards Buka Island and the Japanese base at Buin on Bougainville. These are diversionary attacks from the imminent landing on New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago.


This chronological study of the Second World War provides a comprehensive day-by-day account of WWII. While focused on the military history of the war, with an emphasis on the battles and campaigns fought, the timeline includes social and political history as well.
