Red Army liberates Kiev in the Ukraine

Soviet soldiers in the newly liberated city of KievOn the Eastern Front... Soviet forces, under the command of Vatutin, capture Kiev -- the Soviet Union's third city. Only 6000 Axis prisoners are taken. Most of the German forces have successful withdrawn. 

In Moscow... Stalin issues a special order of the day and makes a broadcast to celebrate the recovery of Kiev in the Ukraine.

In Italy... The US 5th Army continues assaulting the German-held Reinhard Line. No gains are achieved.
