Australians attacking with armored supportIn New Guinea... Australian forces receive armored reinforcements and begin attacks on Japanese strongholds near Sattelberg.

On the Eastern Front... Soviet forces continue to advance northward from Zhitomir. The German 7th Panzer Division attacks toward Zhitomir, from the south, and gives the appearance of relatively greater strength by penetrating the Soviet defense at numerous locations.

In Italy... Elements of the British 8th Army consolidate positions on the north bank of the Sangro River.

In the Mediterranean... The German 22nd Infantry Division completes the capture of the island of Leros in the Aegean Sea. They take 3500 British and 5350 Italian troops prisoner. In addition, a British destroyer has been lost offshore.
