Red Army forces welcomed in BucharestOn the Eastern Front... Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front capture Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

In Italy... In the east, the British 8th Army continues attacking the German-held Gothic Line. In the west, the US 4th Corps (part of US 5th Army) advances after German forces conduct withdrawals from some positions along the Arno River.

In the Volcano Islands... US Task Group 38.4 (Admiral Davison) attacks Japanese positions on Iwo Jima with carrier aircraft from 3 carriers.

In the Bonin Islands... US TG38.4 also attacks Chichi Jima.
