Allies flood Walcheren Island
Tuesday, October 3, 1944 www.onwar.com

On the Western Front... North of Aachen, elements of US 1st Army (part of US 12th Army Group) break through the German forces holding the Siegfried Line. Meanwhile, RAF bombing destroys the dikes around Walcheren Island, near Westkapelle, in Holland. This action floods most of the island in an effort to weaken German defenses.

In Germany... The first Me262 jet fighter becomes operational. A total of 40 are deployed at a base near Osnabruck.

On the Eastern Front... In the Baltic, Soviet forces seize the Hiiuma Island off the coast of Estonia.
