Gbenye's Insurrection in the Congo (Zaire) 1964

A new insurrection led by Christophe Gbenye took much of the northeastern Congo, with Soviet and Cuban support. Moise Tshombe returned to the Congo, as did many white mercenaries, now fighting for the Congolese government. Gbenye's forces took European hostages; approximately 1,650 of these were rescured by a Belgian battalion air-dropped into Stanleyville by American planes (November 25-27).
