Irish War of Independence 1919-1921

In 1919 a Republican guerrilla insurrection began with the declaration of independence of the Irish Republic (January 21, 1919), which was not accepted by the British government or Irish Protestants and their military arm, the Ulster Volunteers. Eamon De Valera was the first president of the Irish Republic.

In 1921 a cease-fire in Ireland (July 11) led to a peace agreement that established the north-south partition of Ireland into the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland.
