Venezuelan Civil War 1868-1870

After the Conservative Revolution, Jose Tadeo Monagas (1784-1868) briefly regained power but died shortly after; and civil war broke out with much bloodshed. A counterrevolution led by the energetic Liberal caudillo Antonio Guzman Blanco (1829-99) succeeded in overthrowing the Conservatives in 1870, and Guzman Blanco, who had been vice president in the Falcon government, assumed power and later (1873) was elected constitutional president. Ruling as a benevolent despot, he improved the country's economy and school system, proclaimed religious freedom, and suppressed the Roman Catholic Church.
