British Pacification of Southern Yemen 1919-1937

The British, in the meantime, were consolidating their presence in the south; the most important change was the incorporation of the Hadramawt valley into the protectorates--the result of the labours of Harold Ingrams, who negotiated the famous "Ingrams' Peace" among the more than 1,400 tribes and clans that had been feuding in that district for longer than they themselves could remember.

Harold Ingrams, architect of the 1937 Hadramaut Peace, whose fascination with the tribes stemmed from his fascination with people.
