Zulu Civil War 1856

Umpanda (d. 1872), the Zulu king, was a weak ruler, but he had two ambitious sons, Cetewayo (1836?-84) and Mbulazi (d. 1856), who were eager to succeed their father. Rivalry and competition between the sons led to civil war in Zululand in present-day South Africa. An army led by Cetewayo marched against another led by Mbulazi, and at the Battle of Tugela River in December 1856, the former won decisively. Mbulazi and all his followers who survived the battle were captured and executed. Cetewayo became ruler, even though his father lived for another 16 years.
