MGM-25A Titan I
Country: USA
Type: ICBM
Introduction: 1962

Titan I was a two-stage, liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) deployed by the United States. The development program began in January 1955, in parallel with the Atlas ICBM. Titan I was first tested on 6 February 1959 and it was operationally deployed in 1962. However, the rapid developement of substantially improved missile systems, including the Titan II, resulted in the Titan I being withdrawn from service by 1965.

Launching a Titan I ICBM required fueling the missile in its silo, and then raising the launcher and missile out of the silo on a massive elevator. Before each launch the guidance radar had to be calibrated by acquiring a target at a precisely known range and bearing. When the missile was launched, the guidance radar tracked the missile and supplied precise velocity range and azimuth data to the onboard guidance system. Because of this the complex could only launch and track one Titan I missile at a time.
