The County class was a class of heavy cruisers built for the British Royal Navy in the years between First and Second World Wars. They were the first post-war cruiser construction for the Royal Navy and were designed within the limits of the Washington Naval Conference of 1922. The fifteen Counties were built in three distinct sub-classes, the Kent, London and Norfolk classes.

HMS Kent (54) was a County class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, and was the leadship of the Kent class. She was built by Chatham Dockyard (Chatham, UK), laid down on 15 November 1924. She was launched on 16 March 1926 and commissioned 25 June 1928. She was in active service with the Royal Navy when World War II broke out. HMS Kent was engaged in operations in the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic and Arctic during the Second World War. At the end of 1944 HMS Kent collided with a tanker. She was repaired but kept in reserve. During the summer of 1947 her armament was removed and she was used for target trials. Finally, she was allocated to BISCO on 22 January 1948, and arrived at Troon on 31 January to be broken up by West of Scotland Shipbreakers.
