The Nelson class was a class of two battleships of the British Royal Navy, built shortly after, and under the terms of, the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. In order that they comply with the limitations of the Washington treaty, these ships were of an unusual design with many novel features. The design was limited to 35,000 tons, all of the 16 inch guns were placed forward, in three turrets, and maximum armour was limited to vital areas.
HMS Nelson was the first of the Nelson class battleships of the Royal Navy built between the two World Wars. Nelson was laid down in December 1922 and built at Newcastle by Armstrong-Whitworth. Launched in September 1925, she was commissioned in August 1927. Nelson was not significantly modified during the interwar period. She was with the Home Fleet when war broke out in September 1939. During the war, HMS Nelson was in active service in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. She was used around the Malayan Peninsula for 3 months in 1945 and the Japanese forces there formally surrendered aboard her.
