The Renown class was a class of two battlecruisers of the Royal Navy built during the First World War. They were the largest capital ships in the world upon completion, until the commissioning of HMS Hood. Both ships served in World War I and World War II.
HMS Renown was the lead ship of the Renown class battlecruisers of the Royal Navy. She was built by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. at Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. Completed in September 1916, she was too late to serve in the Battle of Jutland but served with the Grand Fleet in the North Sea during the remaining two years of World War I. HMS remained in service during the interwar period, being refit twice. During World War II, HMS Renown participated in various campaigns in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. Being one of only three battlecruisers that survived the Second World War, HMS Renown had brief post-war service in British waters as a training hulk and was sold for scrapping in March 1948.
