The York class was the second and last class of the 8-inch (203 mm) gunned heavy cruisers built for the Royal Navy in accordance with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. They were a reduced version of the preceding County class. They can be described as treaty cruisers, the term heavy cruiser not being defined until the London Naval Conference of 1930. Two ships were constructed, although three more were at one stage planned before the 8-inch gunned cruiser fell out of favour with the Royal Navy.
HMS York, was the first of class of the York class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow, on 18 May 1927 launched on 17 July 1928 and completed on 1 May 1930. She was active in the interwar period. During World War II, HMS York patrolled the Atlantic, participated in the Norwegian campaign. Afterward, she was engaged in the Mediterranean. On 26 March 1941, the HMS York was disabled at Suda Bay in Crete as a result of an Italian naval strike. After salvage attempts were abandoned, HMS York was wrecked by demolition charges on 22 May 1941. After the war, the hulk was towed to Bari and broken up in 1952.
