Originally intended as sister ships of the preceding Fuso class battleships, the Ise-class battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy were considered sufficiently different to warrant separate classification. Among the differences were a shorter foredeck, a more closely-grouped secondary armament, a different arrangement of the primary turrets and more closely spaced funnels and uptakes. Like most if not all battleships of their era, they retained the soon-to-be outmoded casemated secondary armament and like all Japanese warships of the period, these vessels still relied on mixed (coal and oil) firing for their boilers. They were reconstructed in the 1930s, receiving improved powerplants, armor, fire control, and internal protection.
For most of World War II, the Ise class battleships wererelegated to training duties by the Imperial Japanese Navy. During 1943, both battleships were partially converted to aircraft carriers. Their aft turrets were replaced with a hangar surmounted by a flight deck, and anti-aircraft guns were added. The lack of planes and pilots resulted in neither ship being involved in combat in a carrier role.
Ise was the lead ship of the two-vessel Ise class battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Japan.
The Ise saw combat service in the Pacific Theater of World War II. After completing a partial conversion to an aircraft carrier, Ise was engaged in the Battle of Cape Engano and was damaged (25 October 1944). Repaired, Ise carried out one last sortie early in 1945. Upon returning to Japan, Ise remained docked and sustained damage from American air strikes until sinking in shallow water on 28 July 1945. The hulk was scrapped in place by 1947
