The four Myoko class cruisers were built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1920s. The ships of this class displaced 13,300 tons, were 201 m (661 ft) long, and were capable of 36 knots (67 km/h). They carried two aircraft and their main armament was ten 203 mm (8 in) guns in five twin turrets. At the time they were built, this was the heaviest armament of any cruiser class in the world. Three were lost during World War II.
Myoko was the first ship of the Myoko class of heavy cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Myoko was laid down at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on October 25, 1924, launched and named on April 16, 1927, and was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on July 31, 1929. She was engaged in the Second Sino-Japanese War. During World War II, the Myoko participated in a number of campaigns in the Pacific, sustaining damage on occassion. After the Battle of Leyte Gulf, on December 13, 1944, Myoko was crippled by a torpedo attack launched by an American submarine. She was towed to Singapore where she remained until the end of the war. She was scuttled after her surrender to the British on September 21, 1945.
