The two Tromp class was a class of light cruisers of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The hull shape was also known as the Argonaut 600. Originally the ships could not be called cruisers for political reasons. They were designed as flotilla leaders and their intended role was to be the foundation for a squadron of modern destroyers that was planned at the same time. The ships were ordered in 1935.
Tromp was the lead ship of a class of two ships. The Tromp sailed to Asian waters before the outbreak of World War II. She was assigned to the Combined Striking Force in January 1942 and participated in the defence of the Dutch East Indies. Badly damaged off Bali on 18 February 1942 (Battle of Badung Strait) the ship was sent to Australia for repairs. Later she served with the US 7th fleet and the British Eastern Fleet. Tromp participated in raids on Sabang in April and Soerabaya in May 1944. Tromp to be decommissioned in 1955 and sold for scrap in 1969.
