The Alaska class of large cruisers was a series of two vessels built for service with the United States Navy during the later stages of World War II. The class was originally planned to include six vessels, but only two were completed. Ships of the Alaska class had a main battery much heavier than those of normal heavy cruisers, but were lighter and faster than most battleships, unofficially classified as battlecruiser. They were built on a cruiser hull, more slender than a battleship design of similar length. The main battery and superstructure resembled those of an American World War II battleship. However, the 5 inch secondary armament was closer to that of a heavy cruiser, with only six twin 5 inch mounts.

The USS Alaska (CB-1) was an Alaska class large cruiser which served with the United States Navy during World War II. She was laid down on 17 December 1941 at Camden, New Jersey, by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, launched on 15 August 1943 and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 17 June 1944. USS Alaska was deployed in the Pacific during the final year of World War II. Postwar, she was placed in reserve. On 13 August 1946 Alaska was decommissioned, in reserve, on 17 February 1947. The large cruiser never returned to active duty. Her name struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 June 1960 and Alaska was sold on 30 June 1960 to Luria Brothers of New York City, to be broken up for scrap.
