The Fargo-class cruisers were a modified version of the previous Cleveland-class cruiser design; the main difference was a more compact pyramidal superstructure with single trunked funnel, intended to improve AA gun arcs of fire. The lead ship of the class, the USS Fargo (CL-106) was launched on 25 February 1945. In all 12 ships of the class were planned but only the Fargo and the USS Huntington (CL-107) were ever completed, the rest being cancelled at varying states of completion with the end of the World War II.
USS Fargo (CL-106) was in active service with the United States Navy between 1945 and 1950. She was deployed to the Mediterranean, Caribbean and in the Atlantic for tours and exercises. In 1950 she was decommissioned and placed in reserve.
