The Portland class of heavy cruisers consisted of just a pair of ships built by the United States Navy. Originally ordered as Northampton class ships in the early 1930s, these cruisers used the same three triple-turret layout for their 8 inch guns, but mounted twice as many 5 inch guns (8 vs 4), and were somewhat heavier. They were redesigned as a result of the original Northampton's being nearly 1,000 tons below the treaty limitations. Since they were built in commercial ship yards, they could not be redesigned to the extent of the follow-on New Orleans class. Instead they were given moderately thicker belt armor and a heavier secondary armament, although they deleted torpedo tubes and the bulbous bow.

USS Portland (CA-33), the lead ship of her class of heavy cruiser was authorized 13 February 1929; laid down by Bethlehem Steel Co., Shipbuilding Div., Quincy, Massachusetts on 17 February 1930; launched 21 May 1932 and commissioned 23 February 1933. USS Portland was operational during the interwar period. During World War II, she participated in various campaigns in the Pacific Theater. During the Battle of Guadalcanal (12 November–15 November) she was torpedoed. After repairs in the United States in 1943, USS Portland returned to the Pacific Theater and participated in further naval operations until the surrender of Japan in 1945. She decommissioned at Philadelphia 12 July 1946 and was maintained in reserve status until struck from the Navy List on 1 March 1959. The cruiser was sold to Union Mineral and Alloys Corp., New York, N.Y. 6 October 1959 and scrapped at Wainwright Shipyard, Panama City, Florida in 1961–62.
