The eighth USS Wasp (CV-7) was a United States Navy aircraft carrier. She was the sole ship of her class. Built to use up the remaining tonnage allowed to the United States for aircraft carriers under the treaties of the time, she was built on a reduced-size version of the Yorktown class hull.
Wasp was laid down on 1 April 1936 at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on 4 April 1939 and commissioned on 25 April 1940 at the Army Quartermaster Base, South Boston, Massachusetts.
Prior to American entry into World War II, Wasp conducted neutrality patrols in the Atlantic. After the United States entered the war, the Wasp was engaged in operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean for a number of months. By July 1942 Wasp was deployed in the Pacific. She was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on 15 September 1942 and sunk.
