French Occupation of Syria 1919-1920

[ 1919 - 1920 ]

[1919] Arab leader Faisal had been promised Syria by the British, but the French -- who by a covert postwar agreement succeeded the British in Syria -- did not keep the promise; fighting between Arab and French forces began (December).

[1920] In Syria fighting between Frech occupying forces and Faisal's Arab army continued; the French took Damascus (July), and Faisal fled the country.

[1921] After the French expelled Faisal from Syria, the British placed him on the throne of Iraq, declaring it a protectorate.
