Agacher Strip War 1985

Continuing tension over the disputed mineral-rich Agacher Strip once again flared into a border war between Mali and Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) on Christmas Day, December 25, 1985. The conflict is known as the "Christmas war" in Burkina Faso. The territory in question was a border region about 100 by 12 miles in size. The skirmishing lasted five days and killed about 100 people. The fighting ended after mediation by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny of the Ivory Coast. Afterward, the territorial quarrel was referred to the International Court of Justice at The Hague, and a settlement was eventually reached, dividing the territory in 1988, apparently to the satisfaction of both parties.
