Labor Uprising in Bolivia 1965

Beginning on May 17, 1965, Bolivian tin miners struck against the government and occupied the mines. General Alfredo Ovando Candia, the commander in chief of the armed forces, sent in troops and began to draft insurgent workers into the army. By May 24, 1965, the miner's revolt had been put down. As a reward for successfully suppressing the uprising by miners and factory workers, the army forced General René Barrientos Ortuño, the president, to accept Ovando as his co- president.
