Burmese Spring 1988

From March to September 1988, massive demonstrations ultimately forced the resignation of military dictator Ne Win (July 23); U Nu announced formation of a provisional democratic government (September 18). But a new armed forces dictatorship headed by General Saw Maung, a Ne Win associate, quickly took power, violently suppressing all dissent, with hundreds of deaths. Human rights leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest by the dictatorship.
